Onward and Around

It feels like summer is waning. The excruciatingly hot days that felt like they would never end are behind us. Every once in a while, I glimpse a red leaf on another tree, and the down comforter will soon be back on the bed.

Time turns in cycles while it marches straight ahead. This dichotomy intrigues me. We feel so sure that we understand the world, but do we? Time and again I’ve been convinced that I know who I am (the only one who knows who I am), but seasons and years, days and nights have proven me wrong. How can we possibly have a firm grip on anything when everything moves and changes and refuses to sit still?

Are there absolute truths? Yes, they are there on a distant hill, guiding our steps, but not everyone looks up, and pretending that they do will get us nowhere. I’d like to think that all my steps lead me in the right direction, but it turns out that, like time, they often have me meandering and turning in circles.
